Online Poker in the US

The process to regulate online poker is long and winding. The GamblingCompliance has made a great effort in listing all the key issues that have to be considered and solved before online poker can be regulated within a state or through an interstate agreement. The current political environment and potential opposing forces may also delay the process. A fresh example is the process in New Jersey that lasted three years from the day discussions were initiated until regulated online poker rooms started popping up in November 2013.

Contradicting information posted on poker news sites doesn't make it easy for poker players to know if they are allowed to play or not, considering there are a few unregulated online poker sites still accepting US players. Fact is, with Black Friday fresh in everyone's memory; you expose yourself to a risk (at least your money) by playing at an unregulated online poker room.

Up to date three states have regulated online poker in the US, New Jersey, Nevada and Delaware. The two latter states signed an interstate agreement on February 25th 2014, allowing online poker rooms operating in Nevada and Delaware to share player pools in hopes of creating bigger and more profitable games. In 2013 another 10 states considered an internet gambling legislation, where some of the states got or have gotten further than others. The 10 states are Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Mississippi, Louisiana, Illinois, Iowa, Texas, California and Hawaii. PokerNews recently gave the grim prediction that no state will regulate online poker in the US during 2014.
